On Monday 14 July we had a talk from Nicola Hope on Designing an Organic Garden illustrated by many beautiful pictures. Nicola also highlighted many of the private gardens (many famous names) she had worked at plus others than can be seen by the public.
Nicola used the theme of ‘Seasons’ as the thread for her talk, starting with winter. Here she stressed the importance of structure for a garden and understanding its aspect, microclimate and soil conditions. At this time preparing for water collection (allowing for wildlife access and escape) and composting need to be considered. Nicola enjoys the many tasks of winter including pruning and weaving willow supports for spring plants. Her phrase ‘if a garden looks good in winter you are on the right track’ resonated with the audience.
Spring was about choosing seeds from organic suppliers (see suggested suppliers below) and the right peat free growing medium for you, Melcourt SylvaGrow was highlighted. Species tulips were recommended as they naturalise and provide great colour. NoMowMay was highlighted as a great way to promote biodiversity.
Summer was ‘flouncy with hot colours’ with ‘sharp edges, with symmetry being less important. ‘Density helps diversity’ as does mixing flowers and vegetables. If there are water issues then gravel garden could be considered.
Autumn arrived with seed head attracting wildlife and choosing roses for their hips. Plants that provide colour into November were highlighted. When planting bulbs consider the Organic Bulb Company as their bulbs are not chemically treated. Equally bare-root plants reduce the chance of introducing disease and will most likely establish quicker. Autumn is also a great time to apply mulch such as composted bark.
All in all a fascinating and informative 90 minutes.
